Globophobia: The Fear of Balloons
Last November, some friends and I formed a little club in which we’d challenge each other every week to do a new piece of art, based on a word or phrase selected randomly. The very first of these was the phrase, “three balloons”.
As soon as I heard this, an image flashed in my mind. I am sure I was influenced by DC horror comics from the seventies such as Unexpected, which I’d been reading lately. And so I painted this as my first entry for our new club, imagining all the time that it was a possible cover for Unexpected, even though that comic is no longer around.
I looked around a good bit trying to find out if there were a phobia describing a fear of balloons to give this piece its title. Later, I used it on the cover of my first book, Really Short Monster Stories
